After the last fall work and before putting them away, it is necessary to clean your tools well to keep them longer, so that they remain effective and so that they are not vectors of disease in your flower beds and your vegetable garden. .

If you haven't done regular maintenance, take advantage of the break in the garden to give them a good workout before letting them hibernate. They will be ready for use next spring.

Clean

Remove any soil that has stuck to the heads of spades, hoes, forks, rakes ... using a quackgrass brush or a painter's spatula.

Scrape off the rust tips with very fine grit sandpaper so as not to scratch the metal. Use rubbing alcohol to remove resin and sap residue from pruning tools.

Disinfect

Tools in contact with plants can transmit diseases. So disinfect pruning shears, shears ... with 90 ° alcohol.

Clean pots, planters and stakes with bleach, rinse and dry.

To fix

Inspect your hardware for any minor repairs that may be necessary, re-tighten screws, replace faulty fasteners and cracking handles.

Sharpen

File the edges of tools with a metal file.

Use a sharpening stone for the cutting tools, being careful to respect the angle of the bevel.

Drain

An annual oil change is necessary for power tools.

Also, make sure you empty the garden hose to protect it from freezing.

Protect

Coat the equipment with linseed oil, with a brush or rag.

This prolongs the life of the unvarnished wooden handles and protects the metal parts from rust.

Tidy

Store your tools in a dry place, iron up, being careful not to leave sharp parts within reach of children.
